BILD Spring 2010: General Information

INSTRUCTORS:

Prof. Milton Saier:
Room 4254 Muir Biology Bldg., Ext. 4-4084 (858-534-4084) Email: msaier@ucsd.edu

Prof. Jack Paxton:
Room 4155 Muir Biology Bldg., (217-417-4046) Email: jax@ucsd.edu
ORGANIZATION:

Three lectures per week plus scheduled seminars, videos and review sessions.
Lecture: MWF 1:00-1:50PM Warren Lecture Hall 2005.
Times and rooms for recitation sections, seminars, video showings and review sessions to be announced.
RECITATIONS: (a.k.a. Section)
There will be several sections (times and rooms to be announced). The recitation sections will be devoted to discussion of lectures, seminars, videos and reading materials.
Scores for the recitation sections will be based on letters to the editors of newspapers, letters to political representatives, written reports, quizzes, seminar, video attendance, etc.
TEXT:
M.H. Saier, Jr. Our Precarious Earth and Its Biosphere, Vols. 1 and 2 .
These texts are available on the BILD18 Website, and hardcopies will be available in class for $10 per volume.
GRADES:
Two (2) one hour exams at 100 points each 200
Final Exam (two parts at 100 points each) 200
Section grade 100
Lecture quiz grade 100
TOTAL POINTS *400

*The lowest two scores of the six will be discarded, and the final grade will be based on the remaining four scores.

SEMINARS AND VIDEOS:
Seminars and videos will be presented throughout the quarter. You can receive extra credit points (4 pts. per event) for attendance with submission to your TA of a paragraph summarizing what you learned. These extra credit points will go towards your section and quiz grades. Because it will be possible to get 100 pts on both your section and quiz grades, you will not want to miss this opportunity.
EXPLANATION OF GRADING SYSTEM:

Midterm Exam I covers the material discussed during weeks 1-5.
Midterm Exam I will be held in class on Friday, May 7th.

Midterm Exam II covers weeks 6-10.
Midterm Exam II will be held in class on Friday, June 4th.

The two parts of the Final Exam (90 minutes each) will be held during the regularly scheduled Final Exam period. Because of the extra time available for these exams, you will have plenty of time to answer the questions in a leisurely fashion. Final Exam Parts I and II will cover the material discussed during the entire quarter.

Makeup Exams: There will be no makeup exam for the Midterm Exams, and a medical excuse will be required to take a makeup exam for the final. If an exam is missed, it will automatically count as one of your lowest scores. It is not advised that you skip either your section grade or your quiz grade as everyone will have the opportunity to make 100 points on these.

Errors in Grading: Errors in exam grading will be corrected by the appropriate TA within one week of the time that the exams are returned to you. Please check the addition and individual problem grading immediately upon receipt. If you feel that a question was graded incorrectly or unfairly, please bicker with the TA who graded that question and not with the professor. Only the TA who graded the question has the jurisdiction to change an exam grade. Remember: You have only one week. If you feel you have a case, don't be bashful. And please keep your old exams until all final grades are recorded so that in case there is a clerical error, it can be corrected.

TUTORING:
Tutoring and assistance with any materials related to the BILD18 course will be available to all students. Dr. Saier and Dr. Paxton will hold regular office hours immediately following lecture and will be happy to see students at other times by appointment. Further, TAs will hold office hours as well as recitation sections. Students should feel free to seek assistance from all TAs, not just their own section leader. A student may attend as many recitation sections as desired but can only sign up for 1 section for grading purposes. There is no limit to the number of seminars and different video viewings you can attend. If you miss a video session, all of the videos are available in the Video Reserves, so you can view them personally in the library. You then need to present a one paragraph summary to your TA who will discuss the video with you. Please take advantage of these services throughout the quarter.

We wish you success in BILD18 and hope that you will have an exceptionally good quarter.
Please let us help to contribute toward its excellence!
